IP Fundamentals
Course Overview
The JANET network and the Internet work solely using the Internet Protocol(IP), as do almost all networks in institutions. This course looks at the Internet Protocol in detail, from the basic principles of operation down to the actual data transmitted, with an emphasis on operation over Ethernet. However it is presented in a way which should not deter those who are not from an over-technical background who should still gain useful information from the course.
The course includes a number of hands-on lab sessions for delegates to work through in small groups, looking at some of the features of the Internet Protocol and examining live packet captures to backup the information provided in the course.

- Principles of operation
- Ethernet – Frame format, ARP, DHCP, Broadcasts
- IP basics, addressing, network masks, subnets, routing, IP packet format
- ICMP, UDP, TCP – principles of operation and implementation
- Applications – Telnet, HTTP, SMTP, etc
- Troubleshooting
Who should attend?
This technical course is aimed at anyone involved with the operation or specification of an IP based network. It will be particularly useful for those involved in trouble shooting network problems or configuring computers to use the network. The activities are largely based on Microsoft Windows so some knowledge of Windows operation will be useful. The course assumes a basic knowledge of hubs, switches, routers, etc such as is covered on the JANET Training's Basic Networking course.
Timetable/On the Day
The course timetable will be adjusted on the day to allow discussion of areas of particular interest to the audience. The course will therefore run from 10am to 4.30pm. Registration will take place from 09:30 – 10:00.
All our courses are designed to provide a balance between practical activities and information dissemination as we believe people learn when they are engaged within the instructional process. This course includes participant involvement through hands-on activities, discussion, group work and simulations created specifically for the course. All delegates will receive a workbook specifically written for the course.
Cost
The cost for staff working in Government funded Higher Education Institutes, Further Education Colleges and the Research Councils is £180 including VAT
