JANET Aurora Infrastructure

The JANET Aurora infrastructure is described below, and it can be seen that in most cases it has been possible to meet the requirements specified by the photoncs reaserch community. Implementation practicaliities have meant that in one or two cases it has been necessary to relax these requirements a little in consultation with the research groups, but this is not expected to have any detrimental effect on the capability of the infrastructure to support a range of advanced photonics research projects.

Fibre requirements

  • Individual span length <= 50km
  • Chromatic dispersion per span <= +1100ps/nm
  • Polarisation Mode Dispersion (PMD) <= 2.5ps (between JANET access points)
  • Optical loss per span <= 17dB

Infrastructure Diagram

The Phase 1 Aurora Infrastructure is illustrated below, and the phase 2 connections to the Universities of Aston and Southampton will be added as these are implemented. (Click on the image for a larger version.)
