Voice over IP (VoIP)
JANET Talk
JANET Talk is a Voice over IP and collaboration environment, based on SIP. JANET(UK) is currently running a trial to determine how JANET Talk may play a role in providing voice and collaboration services to the JANET community. For further information see: JANET Talk
This development of JANET Talk was born out of the JANET Voice Strategy which was written following the results of a requirements study to understand the precise requirements for voice services over JANET.
Voice Advisory Group
A JANET Voice Advisory Group (VAG) has been set up to define and execute a programme of work in the area of Voice technology..
The JANET Voice Advisory Service (VAS) was launched on 18 December 2006. The service offers academic and research organisations unbiased expert advice on a wide range of voice over IP network technolgies and their implementation.
Skype and JANET
Skype is a widely used service that offers Voice over IP. The popularity of this software led JANET(UK)'s Voice Advisory Group to investigate its engineering and any implications for JANET. Further information of this study can be found at [Skype and JANET]
The benefits of Voice over IP
Recently the JANET community, and other NREN communities, have been exploring the provision of voice services based upon IP rather than the traditional form of local PBX (public exchange) with distributed handsets. The immediate benefits of an IP networked voice service are:
- low call costs (within the IP domain)
- the ability to use existing data infrastructures for voice traffic
- the addition of features, such as call hunting groups, and other more flexible services
