Support for Research
Given the significance of the Research Community as a major user of the JANET network, a dedicated Research Support Unit exists within JANET(UK)'s Strategic Technologies Division to assist research projects with services such as JANET LIghtpath, and to engage with members of the Research Community to understand how the JANET network can best support their activities.
During the period in which the UK's e-Science programmes evolved, JANET(UK) was represented on various advisory groups and committees within these programmes. This engagement continues through relationships with major facilities within the UK such as the National Grid Service and other large projects, and JANET(UK) maintains links with broader National and International programmes through contacts such as:
- Representation on JISC’s Committee for Support of Research
- Contributions to European and international initiatives such as the TERENA task-forces and the GLIF activity
JANET Supporting Research booklet has been developed to include some of the services and development areas which are particularly of interest to the research community.
Developments
Developments on JANET are often driven by requirements whcich emerge from the Research Community. A selection of JANET services and current development projects which are particularly relevant to the Research community are highlighted below.
- JANET Lightpath - for projects needing dedicated network capacity.

Research Use of JANET Traffic Data
A policy and legal framework has been created to allow data about traffic on JANET to be used for research that may assist the operation or development of the network in future.
