CSIRT MEMBER
1. ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
JANET CSIRT is a team of technical specialists responsible for providing computer security services to JANET and its customers by taking the lead in the maintenance and development of the JANET security policy, coordination of security issues, managing incident response, developing security resources and maintaining leading edge skills.
2. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
For the purposes of the annual performance round and line management, JANET CSIRT members report to the JANET CSIRT Manager. JANET CSIRT members may also be directed and supervised by senior JANET CSIRT members. JANET CSIRT is part of the Operations division within JANET(UK) and team members will also have responsibilities to the Head of Operations.
3. MAIN DUTIES
This vacancy notice sets out the main duties of the post. Specific duties may vary from time to time without changing the general character of the duties or level of responsibility entailed.
The main duties of the post are to:
- participate in an agreed extended working period, currently 0800-1800 up to a total of 36.5 hours per week, and be available on call in an agreed rota for which an allowance is paid
- participate in the operation of the incident handling service
- monitor the network for security-related issues
- liaise with JANET Network Operations Centre to mitigate threats to JANET
- liaise with other computer security organisations in the UK, Europe and globally
- liaise with JANET customers to provide advice on the secure use of computer and networking equipment
- support JANET customers in identifying and securing compromised machines
- liaise with designated security contacts within JANET customer organisations and other organisations concerned with computer network security
- maintain awareness of changing security threats to enable enhancement of current tools and development of advanced tools to monitor network security
- assist in the development and enhancement of an effective incident handling service for JANET and for organisations connected to JANET, and of systems supporting the service
- locate, collect, and analyse computer security information, and disseminate it to JANET customers
- provide advice for JANET users on computer and networking equipment security via technical articles and documents on the JANET CSIRT web pages
- assist in the preparation of statistical reports as required by JANET(UK)'s management and customers
- assist in the support and implementation of IT facilities used by JANET CSIRT, including the production of software tools and scripts to aid in the execution of team tasks
- assist in the preparation and delivery of educational material, conferences and workshops on computer security.
4. SKILLS REQUIRED
The post-holder should possess the following skills:
- good, concise communication skills
- ability to develop technical solutions and some resolution of complex issues
- ability to work in a close-knit team operating in a challenging technical environment
- an awareness of the public relations implications of the role
- ability to exhibit tact, diplomacy and empathy at all levels within JANET(UK) and its customer organisations
- ability to work to a loose task specification on the basis of initiative and in a self-directed, well-motivated and flexible manner
- ability to negotiate and resolve conflicting priorities when dealing with customers’ needs
- ability to prioritise own workload
- ability to pick up new skills quickly and learn on the job.
5. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential
The post holder will:
- be educated to degree/HND level or equivalent
- have proven experience of working in a networked systems environment
- have a working knowledge of a variety of operating systems, and a good systems administration level of experience and knowledge of at least one
- have a sound working knowledge of TCP/IP and other related Internet protocols
- have a sound knowledge of security issues in a networked environment.
Desirable
The post holder should have proven experience in at least three of the following:
- Windows or UNIX/Linux server administration
- configuration, operation and security features of networking hardware
- hardware firewall management and administration
- writing and maintaining administrative scripts and tools
- server products for e-mail, Web and similar services
and have an awareness of UK & international law relating to computer systems.

The salary for this position will be £23,820 or £28,445 per annum depending on the successful applicant’s qualifications, skills and experience. In addition there is a £1,000 extended hour’s payment plus an on-call allowance. The position is a full-time, permanent position.
