Personal and Community Development (PCDL)
The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) funds JANET primary connections for local authorities in England for PCDL purposes. Over half of the eligible local authorities have taken up a connection. A substantial number have also upgraded the basic bandwidth funded by LSC to enable other local authority traffic to be routed over the connection.
PCDL connections can make use of all of the JANET services – most of which are free. The services are focused on meeting the needs of the educational community and to enable the take up and embedding of e-learning.
JANET(UK) is a partner in many educational projects at national level and continues to offer technology based services required by the sector. Web hosting, JANET.txt and videoconferencing are examples of services which are of interest in the community.
This means that Moodle VLE can be hosted at little cost outside of the local authority network and e-mail for tutors can be easily set up. Filtering can be managed by the PCDL staff and is easily changed using a password protected web page set up for the JANET connection. JANET.txt enables the local authority to send text messages to learners and staff at a significantly reduced cost from the major VLE’s MIS and library systems. Videoconferencing has great potential for PCDL and the Video Technology Advisory Service can provide help and guidance in setting this up.
All JANET Advisory services are focused on technology and further details are available on this web site.
